The significance of CIERMag-IFSC and the future expectative

The CIERMag from portuguese (Centro de Imagens e Espectroscopia in vivo por Ressonância Magnética), research group located in IFSC, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Aberto Tannús, created in 2007 as a Main Research Center of the program CInAPCe of FAPESP, which is part since then. The perspective always was to has a physical structure that could house the experiments of Images and Spectroscopy through Magnetic Ressonance on its pre clinic version, i.e. executing experiment of Magnetic Ressonance on animals models.

This Centre is part of a state network comprised by many intitutions, like USP-RP (Medicine University and FFCLRP), Unicamp (Medicine University and IFGW), USP-SP (INRAD, HC), Einstein Hospital (Brain Institute) and UNIFESP (Neurophysiology Department). All these centers has the Magnetic Ressonance techniques in public, applied to studies of the brain plasticity.

However CIERMag doesn't limited to this colaborations on Neuroscience, developing another studies on different science areas, trying to solve problems related to oil, agriculture, soil science, materials sicence, aeronautics (airfoil structure contamination), beyond many other medicine areas, like materials implants for example. This Center dedicated too on the development of Magnetic Ressonance instrumentation having recently finished the first version of a completely digital Magnetic Ressonance Spectometer conception, indeed this theme was the main highlight on IFSC website, on last jan 17.

The CIERMag new building construction will allow the installation of two new Magnetic Ressonance systems, one to pre clinical studies of 4.7 Tesla, 33.0 cm diameter (for animals yet) and other of 1.5 Tesla to humans, where intend to develop from the insstrumentation to Magnetic Ressonance methodologies whith application on medical diagnoses, and others. The begin of the oprations on the new building will open a still higher range of perpectives of collaboration and development, long awaited.

Beyond the two systems above described, the new building installed on São Carlos Campus Area-2 will house a lab of radiofrequency devices development and prototyping on eletronics, normally used as Ressonance Magnetic probe.

The expectative is huge, order not only the space expantion of CIERMag, as the possibility of house higher field systems, from pre clinical applications (intended to evolve to 7.0 or 9.4 Tesla), to on human systems (intended to evolve to 3.0 or 7.0 Tesla): "This evolution will permit to CIERMag extend the development of research such as comparable to coleagues from another countries who is doing exactly the samething at this moment, with instument that don't limit the capability of expertimantation", enphasizes Alberto Tannús.

This Centre will house too the Technology Development of Ressonance Magnetic applied to Medicine and many others sicence areas, with the aim to transform Images and Spectroscopy equipment through Magnetic Ressonance on a routine instrument to our sicentists, including researchers from several medicine areas of research.
